Taking the steps to take steps to improve (a building) :)
Year 2 - 1
Recommending improvements for a building
MODULE
GBMODSIM is a module on learning to use the BIM HVACTool. Along with its many features, we learnt about calculating certain values like Envelope Thermal Transmittance Value (ETTV), etc. This happened in the first semester of my second year in Temasek Polytechnic.
PROJECT BRIEF
We were tasked to use the BIM HVACTool to simulate the conditions a building would have to withstand. The building is situated in the middle of many smaller buildings. We were tasked to find the solar radiation that the building would face, something similar to how much sun the building faces. How much energy is transmitted through a wall's material (ETTV). And the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), how winds flows with the building and its surroundings. In addition, we were tasked with recommending an improvement to reduce the building's overall energy usage.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Personally, I had a really tough time doing this. Part of the cause is my own laziness and the other about how the module is. I'll skip the laziness part as it was just me giving excuses and not resisting temptation.
The module part was an issue for me as the start of the module when we were just introduced. I felt that this subject was simple as all I had to do was to follow the notes. However, when we were tasked with this project. I was caught off guard as I did not expect what was tasked to us. When the group work was tasked, all I did was follow what my group mates told me to do. This already was a problem as I did not know what I was doing. Then came the individual part, this became a problem as I thought I only had to recommend an improvement. I did not expect that I had to actually work out the recommendations and justify it. With only a week to finish the whole thing. I was rushed for time. Not only that, I also had other modules to deal with. which left me 2 days to finish the recommend and justify parts. Even though it was a hellish experience I have learnt from my mistakes and do not want to repeat it. All in all, it was a pretty good experience though, I have a lot of growing to do.
